About Oyster and Travelcard

As usual, please refer to my favourite website the London Toolkit, if you’re having deep thoughts about Oyster vs Travelcard 🙂

In summary, if you’re staying mostly in central London (zone 1-2) for more than 5 days, Travelcard is a better option compared to Oyster.

Heathrow Express

Capture

I normally have taxi drivers to bring me out of Heathrow terminals. However for the Monopoly trip, I had months to plan ahead. And of course with the pounds value that were almost 6 times my hometown currency, I needed to be aware of ALL possible price cuts!

The first and most important task (for me) after getting off the immigration in LHR is always about getting to the hotel quickly, and getting a shower after a very long flight. There were a number of options at the time, and i just have to credit this website for all the incredible information it has.

So weighing all possible options, in the end i decided to get to Paddington on a 15-minutes journey paying just £5.50 Heathrow Express ticket. Ka-ching! It was a very ideal situation for us, as the hotel we’re staying wasn’t too far from Paddington. Heathrow Express only departs from terminal 2 and 3, but there’s a free transfer service to get you there, so all good 🙂

Since we’re obviously not traveling business class, we needed to find a place to freshen up. I found that Paddington Station has a shower room opened for public with affordable prices. However we decided to change clothes in Heathrow instead, and leave our luggages at the hotel. We walked around Bayswater to find local mobile sim cards, stock up snacks, and just relaxing in Hyde Park before the early check-in. Smooth first day… thank God.
